The “terroir”
The Dentelles de Montmirail
We are in the very heart of this small mountain range. The domaine is at an altitude between 1200’and 1800′, below Saint Amant’s crest, and above the tiny village of Suzette. It is the highest domaine in the Rhône Valley.
The Dentelles with their dramatic mountain tops not only are a famous wine-growing region (including Beaumes de Venise, Gigondas, Vacqueyras…), but also a very sought after area for mountain claimers and trekkers.
The Domain Saint Amant
The domain is composed of twenty different plots of land, scattered on the eastern and southern flank of Mount Saint Amant. The surface area of the vineyard is 32 acres.
The region is a tectonically complex area : the nature of rocks changes from a parcel to another, resulting in a great variety of soils
Topographic map, scale 1 :25000 The color of the plots depends on the age of the rock : (orange : Trias, blue and gree : Jurassique, yellow : Miocène)

Let’s talk geology…
The region covers over 170 millions of years of geological history. It has been the stage of a very unique geological event called DIAPIR DE SUZETTE, which brought up on the surface very old layers (+150 millions of years) containing salt, gypsum, colored marl, limestone and dolomite.
